Reserves have to battle for draw after two-goal shock

After making a great start to their season, Market Drayton Town Reserves were hopeful of further success at home against their Ludlow Town counterparts.

But they started badly went two goals down and had to draw on their qualities of character as much as footballing skills to secure a deserved 2-2 draw.

Gavin Breakwell strike after ten minutes set them back and the game then turned into a physical midfield battle Ludlow dominated, although Drayton wasted a good opportunity that fell to Darren Butters.

After the break Drayton improved and got the lion's share of the possession but further chances went begging and they fell further behind on 55 minutes.

A ball crossed into the box appeared harmless but a mix up between Andy Spooner and John Timmis allowed Breakwell to flick the cross into an empty net and put the away side two up.

This was the spur for Drayton to come back into the game. A long ball sent Butters away into the penalty area and he drove his shot across the Ludlow keeper into the far corner of the net to convert what was his most difficult chance.

With ten minutes remaining Drayton pushed forward and an Andy Roberts shot from just outside the penalty area was deflected past the keeper into the far corner to level the scores.

Grant Cowan was brought on for Paul Hughes and he reacted sharply to a through ball to get clear on goal only to be hauled down just outside of the penalty area.

The resulting free kick was cleared off the line and an entertaining game ended in a draw.

This result left Drayton top of the table on seven points from three games, despite not having performed at their best.

Drayton entertain Dawley Bank tomorrow at Greenfields, 3pm.
