Having won their first match of the season the previous week, Market Drayton gave their new-found confidence an even bigger boost with a battling six run, last over victory over Wroxeter.
Their 23 point haul against one of the Shropshire League first division’s handier mid-table outfits, was a major step away from the dismal early season form that dumped them to the bottom of the table.
Batting first, Drayton made a steady start. Laurence Sidwell scored a quick 17, Richard Coggins and Paul Martin consolidated and had a 49-run start.
Coggins was out for 21 and Martin for 18 before Rob Joule quickened the scoring rate with a good 19, including three fours.
At number five, 14-year-old Steve Whilde (19) kept the bowlers at bay for an hour with an fine knock while Richard Davies (15) and James Coggins (14) pushed the closing total to 154.
Wroxeter found the bowling of Amrinder Virk and James Coggins very accurate and two early wickets were taken by Virk. Young Coggins also had a vital spell of six overs for just five runs.
Wroxeter struggled to make enough headway against this sort of bowling to challenge Drayton’s total.
They could not hold out either and were eventually out in the last over for 90, Richard Davies finishing with 5-24, Nick Reed 3-24 and Virk 2-19.
