Essential service must not be lost

Market Drayton Town Council has called on North Shropshire District Council and the Telford College of Arts and Technology to do their utmost to protect an “essential” bus service that is under threat.

Two weeks ago it was revealed by the Advertiser that the number 816 bus service is in danger of no longer coming into the town.

Councillors at a meeting held last week said it was vital something is done to hang on to the service.

Councillor Val Taylor said: “This is an absolute disgrace, there are an awful lot of youngsters who use that bus and to lose that service, which is essential, would be a disaster.

“A lot of the students are under 18 and cannot drive. We have to do all we can to make sure the service gets re-instated.”

Councillor Mark Whittle said: “By taking away this service you are limiting the options of further education for young people in the town.

“Children are entitled and deserve further education.

"We need to speak to all the organisations involved to see if an agreement can be reached.”

The council voted unanimously to write to both North Shropshire District Council and the TCAT to see if anything can be done.

The problems with the service began after Market Drayton coach company Butters lost the contract to operate the route, which is subsidised by Telford & Wrekin Council.

The contract has now been awarded to Telford-based transport firm, A T Brown, who plan to start the route at Standford Bridge Post Office, near Tern Hill.

It is now up to Shropshire County Council to find the funds to pay A T Brown to maintain the service to and from Market Drayton.
