Stroke club scoops major UK award

An organisation in Market Drayton which gives help and support to people who have suffered a stroke has won a major award.

The Market Drayton and District Stroke Club was named the best of its kind in the UK at an awards ceremony in London last week.

Kath Farrimond MBE, who helped set up the Dysphasia Support Group, and stroke club chairman Jean Johnson received the award on behalf of the group.

It was presented to them by Nick Hewer and Margaret Mountford from the television series The Apprentice.

“It was a big surprise and we are all very, very delighted about it,” Jean said.

“The award ceremony was wonderful and we were very well looked after.”

The Market Drayton and District Stroke Club was set up 17 years ago when the founders, including Jean, saw the need in the town for such a group.

Both the club and the Dysphasia Support Group meet regularly at Market Drayton Methodist Church on Clive Road.

“I became chairman but I had no idea I would be having dinner at Claridges Hotel,” Jean said.

“Kath is a very, very gifted lady who has formed dysphasia groups before and she has a dedicated group who meet fortnightly.”

Jean hopes that the award will make a real difference in the town by attracting new members to the club.

“We hope that there will be more uniformity in the help that people get when they have had a stroke,” Jean said.

“It seems to be very good in some places but not very good in others – not just hospital care but home care as well.

“We also hope it will bring in new members and if there are people needing our help, we will be very pleased to see them.”
