Memorial in Hodnet for Symon and Jay

Parish councillors in Hodnet have agreed to a permanent memorial at the village recreation ground for a father and son who died tragically last year.

A memorial bench will be put in the grounds in memory of Symon and Jay Howlett who drowned while on holiday in Spain last November.

Hodnet Parish Council gave its unanimous backing to the proposal last week when members met at the Lyon Memorial Hall.

Symon played football for the Hodnet Social Club team while Jay was a member of the Tiny Tigers Football Club.

A memorial bench has already been placed in Market Drayton Town Cemetery for the pair but the parish council said that Hodnet Recreation Ground is to have one as well.

Debbie Howlett, who was delighted with the news, said: “I was really pleased with that.

“I have not had a date yet when the bench can be taken up there but I believe that the Tiny Tigers may be changing their name to something in memory of Jay.”

This weekend, the Tiny Tigers are holding a tournament at the recreation Ground where they will be taking part with other junior teams in the area.

Steve Hunt, one of those who helped to set up the memorial for Symon and Jay, said: “It is very good news because it is something that the Tiny Tigers can see and remember Jay.”

Councillor Philip Perry, praised the work of the Tiny Tigers and said: “I think it is a wonderful, wonderful thing because it is available to Hodnet children.

“The memorial will be a wooden bench to go by the changing rooms on the football side of the ground and it will go roughly where Mrs Howlett would like it to go.”
