Widows hit out at 'scum'

Two grieving widows have hit out at the heartless thieves who have stolen solar lights from their husbands' graves in Market Drayton Cemetery.

Vandals first targeted the joint grave of Symon and Jay Howlett, the father and son who tragically drowned while on a family holiday on Spain's Costa Brava last November.

Mother and wife Deborah Howlett said she was devastated that low life thieves had struck.

“I was totally devastated and shocked to believe that somebody could stoop so low as to pinch from graves.

“I only buried my husband and son five months ago and now they are targets for the local low life.

“This is the only thing we can do for our loved ones. We try and make the graves look their best.

"The people destroying them are mindless scum.”
Emma Pye buried her husband Paul, 44, five weeks ago after he died from a heart attack.

She had also placed solar lights by her husbands grave and said that her three children were “distraught” by the thefts.

She said: “We have been left distraught by these attacks, the thieves have no idea the effect it has on the children.

“Paul loved his garden and the children thought leaving the lights beside him was something he would appreciate.

“The people committing these offenses have no respect at all.”

A spokesperson for West Mercia Police said: “We can confirm that we have received two reports of solar powered lights being stolen from the cemetery in Market Drayton.

“We are currently investigating the incidents and would appeal to anyone with any information to contact Market Drayton Police on 08457 444888 or alternatively Crime Stoppers on 0800 555111.
