IT has been revealed that Market Drayton Swimming Centre will be taken over by a private firm, as it has emerged there is still no opening date for the pool which has now been closed for over a month.
Serco has been named by Shropshire Council as the preferred bidder to run the centre from July for the next ten years.
Staff will be transferred under the current terms and conditions of their contracts.
Chief executive Kim Ryley said: “The staff have guaranteed jobs for 10 years, all their entitlements and pensions are protected and the public knows the centres are going to get investment to keep them high quality for at least 10 years.”
Steve Charmley, cabinet member for active and healthy lifestyles, said: “Subject to the successful conclusion of detailed negotiations, Serco will manage five of our leisure centres.”
Serco will also take over at Oswestry Leisure Centre, Shrewsbury Sports Village and Indoor Bowls Hall, Whitchurch Swimming Centre and Shrewsbury’s Quarry Swimming and Fitness Centre in a bid to save Shropshire Council £350,000 a year.
The council has today said there is still no opening date for Market Drayton Swimming Pool. The pool closed on March 12 to fix a leak. It was due to be shut for two weeks but contractors found further problems.
