Petition for pitch signed by 92 in one week

ABOUT 100 people have signed a petition calling for a new community sports pitch to be created in Market Drayton less than a week after it was started.

It is hoped the artificial pitch at Market Drayton Sports Club will serve the town’s hockey club, junior football club and local schools. A draft business plan has been drawn up and will be unveiled next month before funding is sought.

Residents have been calling for improved facilities for many years but only now are the plans moving forward – and the weight of local backing has been displayed by the e-petition.

After being set up online on Thursday 93 people have already signed it.

James Coggins, the website manager for Market Drayton Hockey Club, set up the petition and says it illustrates just how much support they have for the proposals. He said: “What I’m trying to do is support the people in charge.

“The club is doing really well with planning, I’m not involved in that, but it’s taken a long time to get to this stage and this petition shows how many people want the facilities improved.”

He said it was really important to make people aware that facilities needed improving, especially in an Olympic year.
