United praise for revamped carnival

sd3539705wb10carnival-pg-1.jpgAll sections of the Market Drayton community have united in praise for this year’s Carnival.

Around 2,500 people of all ages enjoyed an afternoon of family entertainment at the Grove School on Sunday, with hundreds more on the streets to watch the traditional parade of Carnival floats.

Carnival Queen Chloe Fair said: “The atmosphere was really good and there was something about it that gave everyone a good spirit.

“It seemed to be a bit more vibrant than in previous years and there was something for everybody.

“I was very nervous about my role but I really enjoyed the day and it made me realise just how many people there are in Market Drayton.”

Deputy mayor Councillor Kath Brown said: “It was a fantastic day, everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and the people who organised it did a fantastic job.

“Having it on a Sunday was a good thing because people were able to go out with their families and there were lots of things for the children to do.

“Let’s hope it continues and the organisers build on it for next year.”

Chamber of Trade chairman Councillor Roy Aldcroft said: “The Carnival parade and family afternoon at the Grove School was one of the best family events I’ve seen in a long time.

“I think young and old were stunned by the variety, from the parade through the town to the flying displays, exotic animals and even the chocolate eating competitions.

“Listening to comments as people left, everyone is looking forward to next year, having had a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon in delightful surroundings.”

Shropshire Council member for Market Drayton Councillor David Minnery said: “Overall, I thought it was absolutely brilliant and congratulations to everybody who worked on it.

“The music events were really good, the displays in the arena were really good and the only thing missing was that the sun didn’t shine.”

Market Drayton local policing sergeant Lisa Bradbury said: “”I was there with my family and thought it was a wonderful family event which was very well-attended, with a vast array of entertainment and curiosities to enjoy.

“My thanks and congratulations go to the carnival committee for their hard work and commitment and to all the other organisations who helped make it such a special day.”
