Grove School students are celebrating sporting success after finishing on top of the podium at a north Shropshire schools athletics event.
Year Eight students Becky Warner, Becky Richards, Molly Line and Molly Kelly will be recognised for their success at the North Shropshire Schools Indoor Athletics Championships in a special school assembly later this month.
The championships were held at the Marches School, Oswestry, when secondary schools from across north Shropshire competed over a total of eight events. These included long jump, shot putt, two-lap sprint and team relay.
The eventual outcome was decided when the Grove won the final relay, beating the Marches School and Thomas Adams School, Wem, into joint second place.
Team captain Becky Warner said: “We each got picked to do one running event and one field event before we all did the relay at the end.
“We were surprised to win because it was very close and we were tied on points with the Marches School before the final relay which we won.
“We were excited to win on the day and our parents were really excited for us as well.”
The girls’ success emulates that of the Grove’s Year Eight boys’ rugby team who triumphed in
the Shropshire Schools Rugby Festival back in February.
Grove sports teacher Lyn Murphy said: “The girls come to our athletics club on Wednesdays after school and that has helped us win this competition.
“I’m extremely proud of them because it’s a pretty important success and it keeps our profile high among north Shropshire’s secondary schools.
“It also helps us keep up with the boys with whom we have a bit of a rivalry after their rugby team did so well this year.”
