Creative Chloe’s a carnival winner!

sd3526821wb26cover.jpgA Market Drayton youngster is lost for words after winning a competition to design the cover for this year’s carnival programme.

Chloe Scanlon’s picture showing various aspects of the big event was chosen from more than 200 entries from children throughout the area.

Chloe, seven, a pupil at Market Drayton Infant School, will ride in a horse and carriage during carnival day on July 4 and enjoy a day out with her family at the West Midlands Safari Park.

She has also won VIP tickets to Pinder’s Circus which comes to Market Drayton next month and her winning design will grace the front of the carnival programme.

Chloe said: “I was speechless when I found out I’d won and I’m excited about the carnival.

“The picture I drew was of me and my family at the carnival where we met the Mayor of Market Drayton.

“I want to go on a carnival float, meet the carnival queen and I’m also looking forward to going to the safari park.”

Chloe’s headteacher Sam Scott said: “When I went up to her and said ‘I’ve got some good news for you –you’ve won the competition,’ she was completely speechless.

“She didn’t know what to say and she didn’t expect it at all. The good thing about the competition was it gave the opportunity to infant school children to draw something because often it’s just the older children who get the chance to compete.

“It also links in with our Artsmark Silver award from Arts Council England where we have to enter so many competitions, so it all fits in with what we’re doing at the school.”

Children throughout the Market Drayton area were invited to put their artistic skills to the test for the competition which was judged by local artist Mark Whittle.

He said: “The amount of entries we received was astounding and there was an extremely high standard from all the kids.

“But Chloe’s entry stood out because it had everything to do with the carnival in it, including the crowds, floats, banners and the carnival queen.

“What Chloe thought the carnival was and what she said about it matched what we wanted, and the competition was a pleasure to judge.”
