Athletics stars of the future

md-sd3478314wb08run.jpgHinstock Primary School is hoping to unearth athletics stars of the future with its after-school running club.

Around 20 youngsters, aged from eight to 11, train for 45 minutes every Thursday under the watchful eyes of Jo Coombs, Benita Guy and Genevieve Irvin who are all members of Newport Running Club.

The after-school running club started three years ago and some of the youngsters will take part in a fun run at this Sunday’s Muller 10K road race in Market Drayton.

Benita said: “Once a week we take the children on runs of up to three miles.

“Once every three months, we test them on a one-mile run and some of them are doing it in under five minutes.

“A lot of the kids use it to help them with their football and other sports because we have some good footballers and swimmers.”

Youngsters from the club took part in the Sport Relief Mile in Market Drayton two months ago, but their main aim is success at the North Shropshire Primary Schools Cross Country Championships in October.

Jo said: “It’s only when we put them up against other children that we realise how well they’re doing.

“Every year since we started the club, we’ve won three out of the four races and we’re up against big schools from Market Drayton.

“The first year we did the championships, other schools were coming up to us and saying ‘your kids are fantastic’.”
