Swimmers keep it in the family

Dan Scriven and sister Emma have just been awarded the top prizes in Market Drayton Swimming Club with a crucial vote from the club’s leading coach - their mum, Louise.

“I was bit embarrassed having to vote for them but, thankfully their successes were such that no one could possibly accuse me of favouritsm,” said proud Louise after the prizegiving evening at Market Drayton Golf Club on Saturday.

Both her offspring compete as Sharks, the oldest age-group for juniors. Emma had to master some tough competition to claim her shield for being Drayton’s top teenage girl swimmer - but it was 16 year-old Dan who topped the family honour board.

He scooped four prizes, including Shark of the Year - the male equivalent of Emma’s achievement - and a trophy for posting a national qualifying time in the 100 metres butterfly.

All of which has opened the door to potential sporting fame as it earned him a place on the English Amateur Swimming Association’s talent coaching programme for the West Midlands.

Louise added: “The ASA has set up special training squads for the top 20 boys and girls in their area.

“They will receive the very best training and have the opportunity to prove themselves worthy of selection to the national squads.

“It’s very, very early days yet, but the chance is there and it’s up to Dan what he wants to make of it.”

Dan who towers above his age group rivals at 6ft 4in, said: “I can’t wait to get to work.

“The competition’s tough in the West Midlands region but I’m in the squad and I intend to stay there.”
