Plea to finally close ‘drug-ridden’ Drayton alley

drugstmb.jpgA Market Drayton woman is desperate to close a ‘drug ridden’ alleyway near her home.

But Synthia Bloor - who lives on Fairfields Road - cannot find out who is responsible for the upkeep of the lane - which she claims is home to drug use and street drinking.

Neither estate owners Meres and Mosses Housing Association or Shropshire Council are taking repsonsibility for the problem.

Synthia said she has now “had enough” of the dispute and wants something to finally be done.

She said: “I’ve lived here for 35 years and the state of the lane is disgusting.

“Nobody seems to want to take responsibility for it.

“Needles are left down there as well beer cans and gin bottles. The area is pitch dark at night and it’s dangerous, I cannot understand why it isn’t closed off.”

The alleyway links Maer Lane with Campbell Road but with two other walkways linking the estates there are calls for it to be closed.

The lane, which runs alongside Synthia’s home, was once owned by the old North Shropshire District Council, however following Meres and Mosses takeover of the entire estate, there has been confusion as to who is responsible for the alleyway.

Synthia added: “Years ago the council said they were going to close the walkway.

“You can get through two other ways so it really isn’t needed. The state of it is awful.

“The fence is falling apart and nobody wants ownership of it.

“They keep saying they want to try and improve the estate but they aren’t doing anything about this.”

A spokesman for Shropshire Council said: “The area is technically private land and is not part of the adopted highway, so isn’t part of the street cleaning programme.

“However, members of the council’s community working team are aware of the issues and are talking to the relevant organisations in the area to see what can be done to improve the situation.”
