Anniversary celebrations

CelebrationsA Market Drayton couple have celebrated their diamond wedding with a special dinner surrounded by their family.

Tom and Doris Tibbles were joined by their son, daughter and seven grandchildren as well as numerous friends and relatives for a celebration last Sunday at Adderley Village Hall.

The couple, who moved to Market Drayton 41 years ago, met at the Central Hall in Birmingham.

Tom, a member of the boys brigade, approached Doris after a tip-off from one of his friends.

Doris said: “Tom was a steward in the boys brigade and I was in the girls brigade selling programmes. One of Tom’s friends came over to talk to me and another girl – he then went back to Tom and said ‘there are two young girls over there, lets go over and have a word’.”

Five years later and the pair married at Aston Parish Church in Birmingham.

In 1949 they moved to Market Drayton and both took jobs working for Palethorpes. Tom worked in management and Doris as an office clerk.

Doris said Sunday’s party was a “marvellous” occasion. She said: “Our daughter and two grand-daughters did most of the organising and it was marvellous. We all had a really good time and had a beautiful dinner; everyone really enjoyed themselves.”

And Tom had some tips for any couples ready to tie the knot.

He said: “You have to have the luck to be able to meet in the first place. You have to be in the right place at the right time. After that it’s give and take – that is the main thing. You have to be able to sort things out by talking about them rather than falling out.

“Keep a sense of humour and enjoy the company of your family and you will be fine.”
