An articulated lorry got into a tight squeeze when it tried to negotiate a sharp corner in Market Drayton town centre.
The 40-foot Volvo lorry became stuck for about 20 minutes when it tried to turn right into Shropshire Street from Cheshire Street, Market Drayton, at about 10pm on Monday.
Witnesses said exterior damage was caused to buildings on the bend while the lorry driver attempted to navigate the vehicle away from the junction.
Staff from a nearby kebab shop helped guide the lorry away.
Richard Ewels, police spokesman, said “slight damage” was caused to as many as four businesses.
He added that Central Networks and Shropshire Council structural engineers were called to make routine checks on electricity cables and the buildings affected.
The problem has prompted Councillor Roy Aldcroft, Mayor of Market Drayton, to call for traffic restrictions to prevent heavy goods vehicles “blindly following sat navs.”
He said new measures need to be introduced to protect historic buildings in the town centre.
He said: “The lorry hit a couple of buildings on the corner of Shropshire Street and Cheshire Street as it tried to turn right.
“It damaged a few places and I will be asking the road safety group to look into weight limits or other traffic restrictions because on this occasion we were fortunate nothing was destroyed. These old buildings just need five or six nudges and there will be a serious incident.
“Christine Evans, duty manager at the Tudor House Hotel in Cheshire Street, said: “We have been quite lucky compared to other businesses.
“We lost a hanging basket and some chunks of wood from the exterior of the building but somebody is coming to check for damage.”
It is believed Salopian Care, an empty shop and Millennium Kebab House were all struck by the lorry.
