Three men have been arrested in connection with an attack on a youth in the centre of Market Drayton this week.
It happened in broad daylight on Tuesday at around 11.30am in the town square near the junction of Stafford Street and High Street.
Police believe the youth was assaulted by a group of three or four men who left him with head injuries which required treatment at the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford.
West Mercia Police confirmed three males, aged 16, 17 and 18, were arrested on suspicion of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and have been released on bail while further enquiries are carried out.
Patrick Craig, a volunteer at the Relate Charity Shop in High Street, said: “An argument started and a number of us ran over to try and sort it out, but we were more interested in sorting out the injured man.
“The police and ambulance were called and we did what we could to assist him by giving him clothes to lie on and to try and stem the bleeding.”
Richard Ewels from West Mercia Police said: “Police were notified just after 11.30am about an incident where it appears that three or four men had assaulted a youth, causing head injuries.
“The youth, who remained conscious, was taken to the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford for treatment.
“Police carried out a search of the area and arrested three men in connection with the incident on suspicion of assault.
“They were taken into custody at Shrewsbury Police Station for questioning and have been bailed pending further enquiries.”
