A Market Drayton boy could be set for stardom – either on the sports field or in front of the television cameras!
Jack Groom, who celebrates his 10th birthday tomorrow, has an interesting mix of talents.
Two years ago the young footballer, who plays in goal for Market Drayton Tigers u10s, was spotted by scouts at Manchester United and has been part of their Centre of Excellence Academy ever since.
Despite being part of the same club as Wayne Rooney and Michael Owen, Jack’s loyalties belong to Shrewsbury Town and it was after having his photo taken with the Shrews that he made his television debut.
Jack’s mum, Lisa, explained: “On August 4, as an early birthday present, Jack had his photograph taken with the Shrewsbury Town squad, then the following day he was the club mascot.
“Ian Winter from BBC Midlands Today was reporting on the team at the time and saw Jack was wearing an ‘out of date’ football top as it had Holt on the back.
“Grant Holt was Shrewsbury Town’s star player last season but has since moved onto Norwich.
Impressed
“ Ian Winter interviewed Jack, asking him about his feelings on Holt’s move and the current squad and Jack made his TV debut the following evening.
“Ian was so impressed with Jack’s interview technique that he asked whether later in the season he could run a feature on Jack reporting on Shrewsbury Town and interviewing their manager, Paul Simpson.
“Jack is really looking forward to it, he is very keen to give him a grilling and is hoping that in his report, Jack will be able to provide a tour of the Prostar Stadium.”
Despite his on screen success Lisa said Jack, who attends Market Drayton Junior School, is hoping for a career on the sports field.
She said: “Jack would like to be a professional sportsman. He has a love and a talent for both cricket and football and would love to play either professionally.
“His dream came true when he was Shrewsbury’s mascot and he described it as one of the best days of his life.”
