Hundreds of people are expected in Market Drayton tomorrow as town and country unite for the annual Taste of the Town exhibition.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of the event which was started to help promote the links between the town and countryside.
A host of activities, workshops and displays have been organised and the day starts at 9.30am with the official opening by Market Drayton mayor Councillor Roy Aldcroft, town crier Geoff Russell and regimental pipe major Alan Kirby.
Events include a meat carving demonstration by Market Drayton butcher Scott Shepley, as well as a cookery demonstration and Generation Game-style cooking competition by Gnosall-based Call in the Caterers.
A new addition this year is an eco-corner, with advice on holistic therapy, healthy eating and a children’s Grow Your Own Recipe competition.
Taste of the Town Company secretary Philippa Atkey said: “The idea from the beginning was to join up the town and countryside through its food connections, so it’s a real opportunity for people to see what’s available in their local community.
“It’s very much a community event and people should come because there’s a great deal which will be of interest to them and it’s a showcase of what you can do with food and other things.”
One of those who will be displaying her products is Joanna Spencer from Shropshire Lavender, near Sambrook.
She said: “The main role of Taste of the Town is to get local producers altogether in one place for the people to experience.
“Market Drayton is a very lively town and it’s really excellent to have a group which is bringing together people who are interested in good, home-produced things.”
There will be plenty of activities for children, including a photographic exhibition by Grove School pupils and a visit by the Muller Asda Dairy Bus where youngsters can try milking a life-size model cow.
Muller UK Chief Executive Stewart Gilliland said: “We’re delighted to be joining the many other excellent businesses and food producers to highlight the quality food produced in this area.”
