Farmers’ market continues to grow

Organisers of last Sunday’s Market Drayton Farmers’ Market have hailed its success and hope to make the next one even bigger.

A steady stream of visitors arrived throughout the four-hour event, which was opened by Market Drayton town crier Geoff Russell.

Stallholders from the Market Drayton area and elsewhere sold a variety of locally-produced goods, including cheese, yoghurt, chocolate and wine.

People from as far away as Stoke-on-Trent and Telford came to the market, which was the third to be held in the town after successful events in April and last December.

Among the stallholders were Sue and Peter Bartram of Hope Organic Produce from Stoke Heath who said: “It went very well and we had a busy day.

“People seemed happy to see local produce and it was nice to see customers coming back who had bought plants from us at the last market in April.”

Susan Bower from Market Drayton Country Market said: “People came from out of town and there was a good variety of customers.

“We’re a local market so it was nice to be involved in what the town has to offer and it’s good publicity for us and for Market Drayton.”

Emma Norris from the Good Food Factory, Newport, was at the farmers’ market for the first time and said: “We had a brilliant day and I was very impressed.

“Most people liked the look of the cakes and I was quite pleased so we’ll definitely do it again.

Organiser Sharon Fox-Byrne said the event was growing in popularity and would continue on a quarterly basis.

“There was a steady flow of customers all day and a lot of new people from Market Drayton that I hadn’t seen at previous markets,” she said.

“The stallholders had a good day, sold well and want to be involved in the next one on September 27 when hopefully we’ll have more stalls.”
